NOTE-TO-EDITOR
3rd September 2013
The issuance of Turkey’s first sovereign Sukuk in September 2012 for US$1.5 billion is a clear sign of its seriousness in tapping the Islamic financial market. With a gradual shift in public perceptions and governmental support, the Islamic finance industry has seen considerable growth in recent years. Participation banks in Turkey currently constitute 5.3% of the Turkish banking industry and the 869 bank branches of these banks show the extent of coverage that participation banks now have. With a CAGR of 19.36% (2008-2013) for participation banks as against 8.92% for their conventional counterparts, Turkey has already begun to exploit the sector’s potential.
Despite the recent political troubles, the government has demonstrated strong leadership in developing the Islamic finance industry. With investments of around US$350 billion due in transport and infrastructure projects, Islamic finance will play a much bigger role moving forward.
Bringing you presentations, case studies, key-notes and round-table discussions, the IFN Turkey Roadshow 2013 will once again be the must-attend event for practitioners and professionals who have an active interest in Islamic finance in Turkey.
